Optimal Produciton Control of a Manufacturing System with Customer Balking Behavior

چکیده
In this paper, we consider a single-stage manufacturing system with one machine, which makes a single product to stock to satisfy random demand. Customers inter-arrival times and production times are all exponential random variables. In order to represent customer impatience behavior caused by backlog, we employ a balking function, which is an arbitrary non-decreasing function of the backlogged number for characterizing the customer’s response to the backlog. First, we formulate the problem as a Markov decision process and use it to characterize the structure of the optimal production policy. We find that the optimal production policy is the base-stock policy. Then, the effects of system parameters on the optimal base-stock level are investigated. Lastly, we illustrate the impacts of customer balking behavior on the system’s cost and optimal base-stock level by the numerical examples in which linear and convex balking functions are employed respectively. Numerical examples show that customer balking has a significant impact on the optimal base-stock level as well as the optimal average cost.

Optimal production control of a service-oriented manufacturing system with customer balking behavior
The great challenge for service-oriented manufacturing (SOM) is how to cope with customer behavior while making decision on production planning and scheduling. In this paper, we consider a single-stage manufacturing system for SOM with impatient customers. In order to represent customer balking behavior caused by backlog, we employ a balking function, which is an arbitrary non-decreasing functi...
متن کاملCall Centers with Delay Information: Models and Insights
In this paper, we analyze a call center with impatient customers. We study how informing customers about their anticipated delays affects performance. Customers react by balking upon hearing the delay announcement, and may subsequently renege, particularly if the realized waiting time exceeds the delay that has originally been announced to them. The balking and reneging from such a system are a...
متن کاملBat Algorithm for Optimal Service Parameters in an Impatient Customer N-Policy Vacation Queue
In this paper, a meta-heuristic method, the Bat Algorithm, based on the echolocation behavior of bats is used to determine the optimum service rate of a queue problem. A finite buffer M/M/1 queue with N policy, multiple working vacations and Bernoulli schedule vacation interruption is considered. Under the two customers' impatient situations, balking and reneging, the...
متن کاملOptimal balking strategies in single-server queues with general service and vacation times
In many service systems arising in OR/MS applications, the servers may be temporarily unavailable, a fact that affects the sojourn time of a customer and his willingness to join. Several studies that explore the balking behavior of customers in Markovian models with vacations have recently appeared in the literature. In the present paper, we study the balking behavior of customers in the single...
متن کاملConvexity Properties and Comparative Statics for M/M/S Queues with Balking and Reneging
We use sample path arguments to derive convexity properties of an M/M/S queue with impatient customers that balk and renege. First, assuming that the balking probability and reneging rate are increasing and concave in the total number of customers in the system (head-count), we prove that the expected head-count is convex decreasing in the capacity (service rate). Second, with linear reneging a...
